Exotic Pet Medicine
The term "exotic pet" refers to those critters that are beyond the scope of the traditional dog or cat. These include everything from reptiles, amphibians, and fish, to small mammals such as rabbits, ferrets, and rodents.
Because these species often have special dietary and environmentsl needs, it is important that owners do their research prior to purchasing or adopting one of these pets. For example, an iguana can grow up to four feet or longer and can live up to 20 years. Owners will often dedicate an entire room to their pet iguana. Turtles and tortoises will most likely outlive their owners and be passed on to a family heir. The life span of a rat or gerbil, on the other hand is only 2 to 3 years, and owners, especially children, are often surprised to learn their pet is a geriatric patient at this age.
These are just a few examples of the large variety of species and their unique care requirements. Exotic pets are susceptible to many of the same diseases as dogs and cats, and a yearly health check is recommended to ensure their environmental, dietary, and health requirements are being met..
