Castration (Cat Neuter)

A castration (neuter) is a surgical procedure removing both testicles. The most common reason to perform this surgery is to eliminate unwanted pregnancies and reduce marking and spraying of strong smelling urine. Fighting and roaming are also behavior patterns that may be corrected with castration. We recommend surgery be performed at approximately 6 months of age.

This surgery includes the following:

  • Pre-surgical patient evaluation
  • Pre-anesthetic blood screen (includes complete blood count and chemistry panel)
  • Pre-surgery and post-surgery pain relief injections
  • Inhalant gas anesthesia
  • Full patient monitoring during surgery: cardiac (EKG), respiratory, pulse oximetry, and body temperature
  • Bair Huggerforced warm air heating during surgery to prevent hypothermia
  • Surgical recovery in incubator cage
  • Post-operative monitoring by the surgical nurse until awake
  • Telephone report following completion of surgery
  • Overnight hospitalization
  • Patient exam and pain relief medication on day of discharge
  • Follow-up telephone call from hospital staff
  • Suture removal in 10-14 days
Laser surgery is recommended. Laser technology reduces the trauma and pain associated with surgery and improves your pet's recovery.
